THE ESTUARY - Kindle edition now available for £7.22 at Amazon.co.uk. Plus 2 great new reader reviews!

Here's the direct link to the Kindle edition available to buy at Amazon.co.uk
- price is £7.22.

I've recently come across two new (and great) reader reviews posted at Amazon:

"The protaganists are all well detailed and intresting to read about, you do feel for them and hope they make it through to the end. This book manages to create and capture the survivers sense of dread and horror at the zombie plauge. It is a well contained novel and manages to create a good zombie story without the entire world going into apocalypse mode. In conclusion I would say that it is definatly worth a look if you are a zombie fan."

"Leave it to Derek Gunn to write "The Estuary" and make keep zombies exciting. Gunn really knows how to grab his audience. His action scenes were intense, full of detail and suspense as well as clever ways to meld characters and events together. The story was good as well, contained, but emotional and rich in development."

Thanks to both readers for buying the book and taking the time to post their helpful reviews at Amazon:-)

Mister X by John Lutz

I am a contributing editor with The International Thriller Writers Association and for their October newsletter, The Big Thrill, I was honoured to have the opportunity to read New York Times best-selling author John Lutz's latest thriller, MISTER X. John has won many awards for his writing and his novel Single White Female was the basis for the 1992 film starring Bridget Fonda.

There is a truly wonderful feeling that all serious readers know. The discovery of a new author. And better still is the discovery that somehow, up till now, this author has escaped your attention and he or she has a few books all ready and waiting for you. I love this feeling and my eyes light up when I see the list of the books I can add to my 'must have' list. There is, of course, a downside as well. My list is very long at this time and author John Lutz isn't helping me either. He has a seriously impressive 42 other books, and far too many short stories to even begin to count, that have just been added to my list. Oh well, I wasn't doing anything for the next year anyway. Read the full review and interview with John at The International Thriller Writers Association website.

George R.R. Martin was there...yes really!

Alright just back from two days at Octocon in Dublin and my head is still reeling.

George R.R. Martin was there, yes really. And I got to sit on a panel with him discussing how to bring your work to the screen, I have pictures to prove it too. Of course, George has a tad more experience than me. It was amazing to listen to him go over his experiences in TV, film and the upcoming HBO series. He was well attended by his renowned Brotherhood without Banners and we even had some of the cast come down from Belfast to fill us in on what the series will be like. It doesn’t get much better.

Michael Carroll was there too and his latest book is just out, Superhuman. Be sure to pick up a copy. Peadar Ó Guilín was also in attendance with big news of his follow up to ‘The Inferior’. It’s coming out in May so all those still holding their breath can finally relax. I finally got to meet Wayne Simmons. We have been conversing virtually for years now but finally got to look him in the eyes. He was there with ‘Flu’. No, he wasn’t sick – Flu is the title of his zombie apocalyptic novel and well worth picking up it is too.

Also there were Sarah Rees Brennan, CE Murphy with the youngest fan I have ever seen - congratulations Catie! John (Star Fleet is evil) Vaughan - I have to mention him by name or he won’t talk to me again and a host of others far too numerous to mention.

I have to thank to hard-working organisers, Cat, Gareth, Finn, Danielle and everyone else who were just brilliant. Thank you all for a great weekend.

Vampire Apocalypse: Fallout

HOSTAGE ZERO by John Gilstrap

By Derek Gunn

Here's a taster of what I wrote about the new thriller from New York Times bestselling author John Gilstrap's latest novel for The Big Thrill, the July edition of the monthly newsletter from The International Thriller Writers Association in my capacity as a contributing editor...

Jonathan "Digger" Grave is a free lance hostage rescue operative. When two teenage boys are inexplicably kidnapped from a Virginia residential school for children of incarcerated parents, Grave and his crew set out to locate the victims and apprehend the abductors.

When Hostage Zero by John Gilstrap came into my mailbox I wondered if I would have the time to read it all in time for this article. Hostage negotiation novels are not my first choice usually so I began it with a little trepidation. This novel was nothing like any hostage negotiation I have ever read before. In fact there was no negotiation at all, only blistering action and a taut plot that keeps you turning the pages. Two days later, and suffering from lack of sleep, I finished the book and immediately ordered the first one in this series, No Mercy. Hostage Zero was nothing like I had expected. The pace is frantic, the characters believable and you will end up shouting encouragement to the good guys as they dole out well-deserved punishment to the bad guys. Read more at the ITW website

The war is over...The Vampires have won.

“ incredibly original" -Horror-web. “Action from beginning to end.....I am shocked by how much I enjoyed this story” -Horrorworld. “For those who like their vampires tough and truly terrifying” -Fear Zone

“Derek Gunn didn’t reinvent the vampire novel. Instead he stripped it back to its roots, in the process tearing away the pretensions other writers have used to humanize the fabled bloodsucking monster. His books are not comforting paranormal romances; they are violent and visceral supernatural thrillers.”
International Thriller Writers’ Association

"... Derek Gunn's novel certainly gives the Vampire genre a much needed kick in the teeth, so we can't say we're surprised to see that tinsel town has caught on to the story's potential to wow genre fans looking to mix a little action with their horror."
-Quiet Earth

“Forget the vampire books where the creatures are romantic and dreamy. The blood suckers in Vampire Apocalypse are monstrous and a nightmare. Derek Gunn’s original vision of a future dominated by the undead will have you quickly turning each blood soaked page!”
-Richard Finney, Producer, Screenwriter

International Thriller Writers Association article - THE ARK by Boyd Morrison

The greatest archaeological discovery in history could mean the end of mankind.

A relic from Noah's Ark gives a religious fanatic and his followers a weapon that will let them recreate the effects of the biblical flood, and former combat engineer Tyler Locke has seven days to find the Ark and the secret hidden inside before it's used to wipe out civilization again.

Kindle edition of FALLOUT now available

FALLOUT is the third book in Derek Gunn's post-apocalyptic military series, Vampire Apocalypse and it's now available on Kindle from Amazon in addition to the paperback edition.

A New War begins. The Vampires rule. Humanity is enslaved in a nightmare world wherein those who have survived are bred as food for the vampires and as entertainment for the vicious thralls who guard them. The brief but bitter conflict between rival vampires has left Von Kruger victorious. But the thralls have used the war to their own advantage and have grown in power and confidence. The rivalry between vampire and thrall is set to escalate, but first they must eliminate another threat--the small band of free human survivors.

Harris and his team hold a secret of immeasurable power--a coating for bullets that can kill both thralls and vampires. The thralls want it, and the vampires must destroy it. But first they have to find the rebels. Together they hope to forge an uneasy alliance, at least until the free humans can be hunted down and destroyed. But neither side can ever hope to trust the other. Earth is the battlefield. The human population are the pawns. And the doomsday clock continues to tick relentlessly toward nuclear Armageddon.

“This volume of the story had some of the best fight scenes Gunn has written so far in the series...If you dig an action-packed tale of free humans fighting off monstrous cruel vampires and the twisted thralls that serve them…check out the Vampire Apocalypse books, you won’t be disappointed.” Flames Rising

His books are not comforting paranormal romances; they are violent and visceral supernatural thrillers.”

I'm back in the classroom...

My wife saw that the Irish Writers Centre here in Dublin was running a course on writing historical fiction for one term and persuaded me to sign up. She knew that I had been struggling a little with a new novel (historical horror) and thought it could only help. Well it's been quite some time since I have attended classes (with the exception of professional work related courses) and...I'm really enjoying it. The tutor is a former fellow of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the class consists of me and 7 women and I'm getting great feedback on my work from a female perspective. The first draft of my novel is actually finished and this course is providing me with a terrific opportunity of feedback on my story, language, structure and characterisation. I suppose it's similar to joining a writers' group but with the advantage of a tutor with an MFA in Creative Writing. This novel is the first in what will hopefully become a new series for me...

And although this book was first published in 2006, it's still getting terrific review. Here's a taster of the latest one posted at Suite 101.com last week -

"Unlike many other vampire books Derek Gunn's first novel portrays vampires as the bloodthirsty, soulless creatures they were before they were romanticised.

The best part about this novel is the story. Derek Gunn writes in such a way as to keep the reader engaged and wanting to know what happens next...it is difficult to put the book down. Every chapter seems to end with a cliff-hanger and the action-packed pace of the story seldom lets up."

It's been a busy month: My three VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE books are now available in multiple ebook formats via SMASHWORDS - the first book, A WORLD TORN ASUNDER is just $4.99. The first two books in the series, A WORLD TORN ASUNDER and DESCENT INTO CHAOS are also available in Kindle editions at Amazon.com and the third book FALLOUT will be available shortly in this format. Of course, all three are still available in Trade paperback editions at many online booksellers.

THE ESTUARY, my zombie adventure published by Permuted Press is now available in Borders and Waldenbooks stores across the USA.

Works in progress: I've just finished the fifth installment of the Vampire Memoirs for the forthcoming (2011) VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE graphic novel and I'm very pleased on how they turned out. Kudos to the publisher Eric Mullarky of New Baby Productions for coming up with the idea of including some "bonus material" for the reader - diary extracts at various points in histroy leading up to the timeline of VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE written by one of the vampires. This was a challenge for me as I never thought of writing from a vampire's point of view. I had to ensure that I steered completely away from bestowing them with any humanity as readers of the series will know that they are most definitely portrayed as base, evil creatures who are devoid of any human emotions!

Best,
Derek Gunn

I'm delighted to announce that my historical horror stories in my HMS Swift universe are now released as a three chapbook set and collectively called SENTINELS OF THE SEA.

Set against the historical backdrop of the fragile peace that existed between the American Revolution, the looming French Revolution and the threat of Napoleon’s growing empire, the crew of the HMS Swift face the walking dead in “The Diabolical Plan”and vampires in “The Island”.

The year is 1791 and Captain Thomas Butler and his loyal crew of The HMS Swift, a class five frigate in the service of King George III of England, are sent on a series of missions where nothing is what it seems and forces far darker than any of them have experienced before, reign supreme...

Writing from a vampire's point of view...

I am really excited about the forthcoming VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE Graphic Novel. I am a lifelong fan of comics so, seeing my own work adapted to a graphic form, is really cool. I am writing a few interludes for the Graphic Novel that dip into the history of the vampires and they are coming along really well. These will be totally new and unpublished in any other format and interestingly, they are written in the form of diary entries of vampires throughout the ages. This was the publishers idea and the plan is to have around 4 of these interludes as part of the graphic novel. Each will run to a couple of pages. I've two completed and submitted so far and working on the third.

I'm a contributing editor for The International Thriller Writers Association and have the pleasure of writing about new releases and interviewing authors. Here's an excerpt of what I wrote about the debut thriller from Mark Greaney for the March issue of their online newsletter - The Big Thrill...

The Gray Man by Mark Greaney
By Derek Gunn

'The Gray Man - This debut thriller takes readers on a lightning-paced international chase where the hunter becomes the hunted. American operative Court Gentry, dubbed the Gray Man for his legendary skill as a shadowy killer for hire, races against time and battles teams of government assassins as he crisscrosses Europe to save one imprisoned family--- knowing innocent lives hinge upon his success as a cold-blooded killer. The Gray Man promises raw-edged suspense at every turn.' READ FULL ARTICLE

Many thanks to Eric Mullarky of New Baby Productions for sending me this!

And - don't forget the CONTEST is still running until the end of March! Here's the details again -

I've just received advance copies of the three chapbook set titled SENTINELS OF THE SEA. It will be coming out shortly from Ghostwriter Publications in the UK and will be availble to purchase only at their website. Meanwhile...I've got a few sets to give away!

As you may be aware, My book, THE ESTUARY (Permuted Press 2009) is now available across the US in Borders and Waldenbooks stores. Now this is very exciting for me. But the problem is that I don't get to enjoy that self-satisfied feeling of walking into a book store and seeing my book on the shelves! A few really nice folk in the US have been kind enough to send me photos of THE ESTUARY in their local Borders. So I've decided that anyone who snaps a photo for me and sends it, or a link to it, will be entered into a draw for a free set of three chapbooks in a slipcase. Of course, those who have already sent me photos are entered.

Just send me a photo (and tell me the location of the store) via email (derekg@iol.ie) or via Facebook. I'll leave it open until the end of the month and then draw the winners.

Here's some info to whet your appetite -

THE ESTUARY in Borders, Texas!

Fellow author Rhiannon Frater very kindly took some photos of THE ESTUARY on the shelf of her local Borders at the Domain in Austin, TX and emailed them to me today. I'm sure by now readers will know that THE ESTUARY is published by a US publisher and is available through Borders and Waldenbooksin the US. But, as I live on the other side of the Atlantic, I have to rely on the kindness of people to send me photos - it would be a bit of a trip for me to pop along to a Borders:-). I also hear copies have been spotted in Borders stores in Wisconsin and Ohio. Any other sightings, I'd love to hear about them!

“The Diabolical Plan is just a brilliant story!”
12th issue of THE HORROR FICTION REVIEW, released -21-06 by Novello Publishers

"The Diabolical Plan, by Derek Gunn, delighted me with its convincingly written Aubrey/Hornblower-style high seas adventure style, detailing a diabolical plan in which the living dead will become a weapon of war between the English and French." I have also written the first HMS Swift novel about an evil that has laid dormant for years that now threatens to engulf the whole world. It’s called PIRATES and maybe one day, it will see the light of day also...

About VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE:
VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE is a series of books written by Irish author, Derek Gunn.
The war is over and the Vampires have won.
The drying up of the world's oil resources leads to the fabled End of Days. Technology stagnates and communities grow ever more insular. With communication between cities lost and attention turned inward, the vampires rise from the shadows where they have survived for centuries and sweep across the globe.

By the time word spreads it is far too late and Vampires enslave humanity and keep them in walled cities to breed. The Vampires are masters of the darkness but maintain control by day through the use of Thralls - humans who have been bitten but have not yet crossed over, and whose inhuman lusts make daylight as terrifying as night.

In the midst of chaos, a small band of rebels lead a terrified existence, but their survival is threatened by the Vampire's new scanning procedures. Peter Harris is an ordinary man. Young and reckless, he is frustrated with the group's stagnation and pushes for one more daring mission. His recklessness has exposed the group--but it has also increased the size of their community. Now, as circumstances force them to take the offensive, and accompanied by a small group of professional Vampire assassins, John will make one last stand for humanity's survival in the Vampire Apocalypse.

“Action from beginning to end.....I am shocked by how much I enjoyed this story” -Horrorworld

“…an intriguing plot, with plenty of action and a concept that is far from ordinary.” –Dark Scribe Magazine

“…an incredibly original piece of fiction that keeps the reader turning the pages.” –Horror-web

–International Thriller Writers’ Association

Derek Gunn lives in Dublin, Ireland with his wife and three children. His post-apocalyptic thriller series, Vampire Apocalypse, has been widely praised on both sides of the Atlantic in the genre media. The three books in the series are; "A World Torn Asunder" (2006), "Descent into Chaos" (2008) and "Fallout" (2009). Derek also released "The Estuary", published by Permuted Press in 2009. An adaptation of Derek's first book is under option and is currently in active development as a major movie. Visit his website at www.derekgunn.com

The VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE story...so far!

Introduction

My first VA book, A WORLD TORN ASUNDER, was released in September 2006. It tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world : The war is over and the Vampires have won. The drying up of the world's oil resources leads to the fabled End of Days. Technology stagnates and communities grow ever more insular. With communication between cities lost and attention turned inward, the vampires rise from the shadows where they have survived for centuries and sweep across the globe.

In the midst of chaos, a small band of rebels lead a terrified existence, but their survival is threatened by the Vampires' new scanning procedures. Peter Harris is an ordinary man. Young and reckless, he is frustrated with the group's stagnation and pushes for one more daring mission. His recklessness has exposed the group but it has also increased the size of their community. Now, as circumstances force them to take the offensive, Peter will make one last stand for humanity's survival in the Vampire Apocalypse.

The second book, DESCENT INTO CHAOS, was released in September 2008 and continues a short time after book 1 ends: The War is Over. The Vampires have Won. But a new campaign is about to begin …
The first battle is over. Now the human survivors will pull themselves from the ruins of their base to find that the world is a very different place outside Nero’s territory. Nationally, the vampires have organised themselves into cabals but the scramble for power, raw materials and humans for their food, have led to an uneasy peace. Below the surface each state plots against the other and only the far-reaching power of the Vampire Council holds all-out war at bay. Their control is slipping. And Peter Harris and his team have a plan that might just push them over the edge…

The third book, FALLOUT, was released in September 2009: A New War begins
The Vampires rule. Humanity are enslaved in a nightmare world where those who are still alive are bred as food for the vampires and the entertainment for the vicious thralls who guard them.

The brief but bitter conflict between rival vampires has left Von Kruger victorious. However, the thralls have used the war to their advantage and they have grown in power and confidence against their former masters. Their rivalry is set to escalate but first they must eliminate another threat - the small band of human survivors. Harris and his team hold a secret of immeasurable power – a coating for bullets that can kill the vampires. The thralls want it and the vampires must destroy it. But first they have to find them. An uneasy alliance is forged until the humans can be destroyed but neither side can hope to trust the other.

Across the country another power struggle threatens them all. There is a power play at work that Harris does not understand. Harris’s warning of the serum’s deadly effects has been ignored and the doomsday clock continues to tick relentlessly towards Armageddon.
On top of all that there is a traitor in the human community and the small matter of a potential nuclear catastrophe…

New Permuted Press Kindle edition of VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE: A WORLD TORN ASUNDER - some reader reviews!

The Permuted Press Kindle edition of the first Vampire Apocalypse book, A WORLD TORN ASUNDER, is a revised and extended (by about 25,000 words) version of the book that's in print (first published Sept. 2006).

Thanks to those who have been buying it!

There's been a couple of very positive reader reviews of this new edition on Amazon:

"The overall feel of the book is dark. This book was original. The story was well written."

"First off, on a post apocalyptic kick, I came across this book and quickly ate it up. Vampires and apocalypse? Sign me up! Regarding the story, I was not disappointed. It had the right amount of action and dialogue, the characters are enjoyable, and the plot made sense and the story moved along well. I will be buying the second book, if that's any indication of how much I enjoyed it."

And, it's available at the special low price of $4.95 at Amazon
